Regionalization for Ungauged Catchments — Lessons Learned From a Comparative Large?Sample Study

چکیده

Model parameter values for ungauged catchments can be regionalized from hydrologically similar gauged catchments. Achieving reliable and robust predictions in by regionalization, however, is still a major challenge. Here, we conduct comparative assessment of 19 regionalization approaches based on previously published literature to contribute new insights into their performance different geographic regions. The use geographical information, physical catchment attributes, hydrological signatures, or combination thereof select donor subsequently transfer entire sets the receiver catchment. Each approach was tested leave-one-out cross-validation with bucket-type model (the HBV model) using 671 United States diverse hydroclimatology. We then evaluated several hydrograph aspects, compared it against calibration benchmarks, linked descriptors. results this large-sample study summarized three lessons: (a) Catchments benefit well-chosen independent region how well they modeled at best. (b) Almost perfect donors exist most an excellent relative reached current approaches. This implies that there considerable potential improvement prediction (c) ranking depends predicted hydrographs are evaluated. These findings indicate multi-criteria evaluation essential performance.

Unit hydrograph characterization of flow regimes leading to streamflow estimation in ungauged catchments (regionalization)

The IHACRES rainfall–streamflow modelling approach provides a powerful set of techniques for assisting with parametrically efficient regionalization of streamflow response characteristics (unit hydrograph and loss module parameters) from inputs of rainfall, evaporation surrogates and physical catchment descriptor data. Recent work has indicated where further improvements can be made to the mode...

Regionalization of the Iowa State University Extension System: Lessons Learned by Key Administrators

The cyclical economic downturn in the United States has forced many Extension administrators to rethink and adjust services and programming. The Cooperative Extension System (CES), the organization primarily responsible for governmental Extension work in the United States, at Iowa State University responded to this economic downturn by restructuring its organization from county based to a regio...

Lessons learned from comparative and evolutionary physiology.

Comparative physiology is the exploration of physiological principles through examination of the functional diversity among animal species. Because diversity derives from evolution and natural selection, the work comparative physiologists do often extends beyond characterizing a physiological system at the mechanistic level to consideration of how the mechanism is relevant in an ecological or e...

Ensemble predictions of runoff in ungauged catchments

[1] A new approach to regionalization of conceptual rainfall-runoff models is presented on the basis of ensemble modeling and model averaging. It is argued that in principle, this approach represents an improvement on the established procedure of regressing parameter values against numeric catchment descriptors. Using daily data from 127 catchments in the United Kingdom, alternative schemes for...
